I am not sure why the picture got placed all over the place…

I don’t understand the red line. Is it the table top size? The aspect ratios seem different.
I like them both, maybe the first.
Also maybe remove some (or all) of the light from the centre if you have room. I think it adds more distraction than character. … Just me maybe.

The early bird gets the worm but its the second mouse that gets the cheese.

I like layout no. 2. Looks like an angle looking over the top. Interesting question though, both have their strong points.

Jamesw

It sems like you would get more figure going with layout no1. That being said, i like no2 personally. At the top there appears to be two figures high fiving over an oval table. Just my imagination, but im drawn more to it because of that.

I like layout #1, it’s got it going on all the way through the piece!
I see everyone is “reading” what the shapes are! That’s the cool thing about
Some veneers, there’s a story there as well!
However, if its a table top it will be covered somewhat, so myself, I would pick #1

I like them both too, but It’s hard to tell without seeing the rest of buffet, but just going strictly on the photos I think I’d pick #1,

  1. seems almost too busy although it has amazing figure.

Thanks for all the Input.

It was very difficult for me to choose one way or another. the figure on layout 2 are striking.
I know from past experience my wife tend to favor “light” pattern. I have not asked her input yet, I am concerned she is going to throw me way off :)

Paul:
The red lines represent roughly the part I would be using.
I am going to scale the pictures and do an accurate layout before ordering this particular veneer. This project has been taking a lot longer than I thought it would. Learning never stops.

I will try it without any of the light color in the center but I think I will loose some striking pattern along the center in doing that. It does not hurt to try anyway.

Couldn’t resist:)
Layout 2 with much less light colors in the center. I will experiment some more.

Both are definitely interesting. I prefer #1 because as others have mentioned, the pattern seems to have a better flow though the entire length. Either way, it is an interesting grain pattern.

If you really stare at lay out 2 it looks like a tribal mask. You can pick out eyes nose etc.. so with that said I see a North American Indian table here. Maybe the front two legs as todum poles and other art work brought into the skirt. Just a thought.

I like #3 Abbas. Just me maybe but as I said above, I find the light colour more of a distraction than a feature.

The early bird gets the worm but its the second mouse that gets the cheese.

Thanks Paul.

I agree about the light color being a distraction.

Abbas, Castro Valley, CA

I like layout 1,
I think the figure outweighs the lightness,
and you could always use a light stain to bring them closer together.

I still have these if your interested in doing a 4 pc book match.
They’re yours if you would like them.
I can send you actual pics if you want to see them, just let me know.

Bently! Thanks my friend.

I forgot I have that one…
I have to bring it down and try it.

Abbas, Castro Valley, CA

Ooh I like that last picture. That grain is way way cool. I can see that seriously pop

Here are the 4 pcs I have, put together digitally.

The last one is pretty intense.

Thanks!

Abbas, Castro Valley, CA

Wow i love all of them. Ok time to build something with all of them.

Jeff Vandenberg aka "Woodsconsin"

With all of them, I will go broke:)

One of them coming soon. As soon as I figure few things.

Abbas, Castro Valley, CA

The old saying…. Go for broke or go home and sit with the garden gnome. Lol lol
No we dont want you to go broke. Those were some awesone pieces though.

Lol

I agree that the light in the center is somewhat distracting, but also it kind of looks like a long lizard which can be very interesting, or not, depending on the viewer. Sorry Abbas, I wish I could offer more helpful remarks.

Thanks Mike!

I am expecting some veneers by the end of the week.
That should give a clear idea.

Update on the veneer front: it’s on with better bong glue and veneer press.
Yes I went crazy with the taping. It’s my first time.

I will post the completed project with better pictures of the top as soon as I am done.

Abbas, Castro Valley, CA

Looks pretty nice !

The early bird gets the worm but its the second mouse that gets the cheese.

Thanks Paul.

I got pretty lucky. only one ripple overall. Not bad for my first time with vacuum press.

Abbas, Castro Valley, CA

Pretty cool, thank you for sharing.

Jamesw

I’m afraid I’m in the same boat you are I can’t decide Abbas,I’m sure which ever one you choose your table will be spectacular.

Thanks Jim.

It’s decided for sure now. The top has been veneered.
I am hoping to get sometime this weekend to fit the edging, sand and first coat of finish.

Abbas, Castro Valley, CA

Wow that is so much bigger than the other pictures above made it appear. I thought it was like a foot long or something. LOL.. Nice work. It’s beautiful.

What is bong glue? Is that a typo?

Abbas, my guessis OBG plus spell correction.
Am I right?

The early bird gets the worm but its the second mouse that gets the cheese.

Thanks Brian.
The top is 68 1/2" without the edging. Most likely 21″×70 1/2" with the trims.

Sorry typo on the glue. The glue for the top is better bond:

The rest of the project was Hot hide. I chickened out on the top:)

Paul I made liquid hide but I though I should try it on less expensive veneer first.
I did use some of it as a sealer on this project also as a lubricant for the hammer to gain some time before gel time.
In other words I roll a very thin layer of liquid hide on the good face of the veneer, then I apply hot hide on the substrate and hammer right away. No flipping.
That buys me time and I still get to seal the top.

Since I prefinished everything before assemble for this project, I can say I did not see any effect on the finish from the added salt. Some of it has been finished 5 months ago and left alone in the garage for the whole summer while we were traveling.
I have also experimented without a hide sealer and boy what a difference on the finish. It’s just much warmer with the hide and the figure seems to pop more.
I have done some work with the hot iron to liquefy the glue on longer pieces but I still need some training.

As it stand, I need to sand the top and finish it. I am also waiting on my wife to choose the pulls.

I think It should be ready in a couple of weeks as I am going to visit a couple Schools with my older son this weekend. So no woodworking:)

Good Job Abbas,
Great learning experience, wish it were me!

Me too Bently, I wish it was you:)

You would have gotten a perfect finish.

I have been struggling with the top finish for the last few weeks. I have sanded and resanded I still got streak lines and drips and what have you.
It was with wipe on too(:- I did not have the guts to spray.

Abbas, Castro Valley, CA

Wow! Looking good.

Losing fingers since 1969

Amazing, very nicely done. A table that size has to really stress you out. You did an amazing job. Congratulations.

Jamesw

Thanks Brian and James!

It made me sweat and stress for sure.

Abbas, Castro Valley, CA

When do we get to see it in all it’s glory? :-)

Losing fingers since 1969

I think next week. I should be able to post.
It’s been a very long birth.

Abbas, Castro Valley, CA

I think you did one heck of a job. Great pictures of the process. The veneer is gorgeous !
