Plugger, On my router the nut came off rather easily.
The hex key holds the spindle steady while the wrench (original Milwaukee collet nut tool) is turned CCW. Didn't put up any fight like I was expecting. No LocTite or other retention method, just some modest torque.
You could also hold the wrench steady and turn the hex/spindle CW to loosen.
