Thanks Ron. A friend of mine who used to cut maple, sitka, cedar etc. on the west coast gave me the quilt maple board and said "make something with it". It was 18" wide and an inch thick. Wide enough to make a one piece back. Carving quilt maple is a tough and chippy chore. Toothed planes followed by abrasives were a must.
