Are you talking about cutting through or etching? 20W will get you pretty deep if you’re etching. The issue there becomes how much char you get. They’re saying 20mm of pine for cutting…it’s not necessarily the power, but the focal length that comes into play with the larger diode lasers. CO2 will get you a deeper cut, but it’s obviously a larger machine and more $$. 

Beyond the obvious space considerations and costs, as with any tool, you need to look at what you want the laser to do, then match the choice to that.
