I use a mix of coke and ammonia and an old tooth brush. Cleans them up great but don't make a shine. For stiff tumblers, I use a bit of dawn dish detergent. I've had some that were so crusty, I had to take the tumblers apart and clean. To get a shine, I have used very fine sandpaper but that will take the clear coat off the exposed brass. These look in great shape for 1950's doors. 

I've been lucky so far with the tumblers. It seems that a small drop of clock oil has been able to smooth them out so far. I bought a shrink pack of 2" brushes, brass, stainless and stiff fiber.  They all have a use in my shop from shining, waxing threads and polishing brass.  I did use some 400 grit on one door, it shines real nice but the varnish finish is gone.  Now I wonder how long it will take to get ugly.
