Yeah, getting the stock thickness right can be a little bit of a challenge. A consideration is to make up a bulk of spline blanks all at once, using a couple different wood types. That way you’ve already got the drum sander properly set and it’s just a production line to get the blanks properly dimensioned. Bundle them up and stash them aside for future use.
I’ve done this with kumiko blanks, since I’m impatient with fine dimensioning and kumiko is supposed to be a zen hand tool thing…dimensioning a bunch of sticks is not my ‘zen’!
