Here are a few pics of the repair of the damaged area.
I removed additional veneer around the damage to provide some straight edges to work against.
Then I could fit replacement pieces and glue them in place.
Once the glued was dried, I very, very carefully scraped the surface to blend in the repaired pieces. The repair is not very noticeable.
