I play the ukulele and have both 4 and 8 string versions. My understanding is that the main difference (above the string count and tuning) is a mandolin uses metal strings and an uke does not. Is that accurate?
Mandolin is tuned in 5ths: G3-D4-A4-E5. Has a floating bridge with a tailpiece. The geometry and construction is quite a bit more complicated because the higher string tension causes higher stress across the length of the instrument. Mandolin is more similar to the violin than it is to the ukulele or guitar.
