re: Attaching the bases

Well, to finish this story - I went back and drilled the pilots in the base with a 5/32 drill bit (shank size for #8 screws). Also chiseled around each opening and cleanup up a bit on the box bottom to ensure no mounding around the pilot holes. That all solved the issue.
