Hairy, if you need grunt, the button nuts are better, but at 5 to 10 times the cost (depends on size and supplier), I'd stick to the clamps. With the brass threads, I haven't pushed the Rockler ones past "snug".
If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
