BB1 -  they are full 3/4" pine with no plywood base.
Splinter Group - Not very hard really, its all 45 degree angles.  Start from the middle and make slight sanding adjustment as you go.  Each time I go around as a layer, I sand the edge on the belt sander so the next layer goes on nice.
