Really really really nice, Pottz.  A great project for a "rainy day".     After seeing Duck's version, is oxidation an issue with "skin" type of blanks?  If so, is there anything to be done or is that just the way of the world?    You should really be proud of this one.
In the past I used to buy so many kits I lost track of source/composition/specifications.

That yellow snakeskin was made around the same time as that photo of the chipped out one.  The yellow is not a photo shoot/lighting issue, it is yellow much like the gold (Hmmm it is an upmarket gold ultra cigar... any chemistry at play). The assembled pen was kept in a closed case with my other non-wooden cigar pens

while that dodgy segment has been sitting on a dowel in the workshop with all my other oopsies, open to all ever since,

The difference was never so obvious, or maybe too many vinos, in the past until I put them "side by side" for this post's reply.
Though I wouldn't worry about the discolouration Papa, It's like that old car in the past that never started first time... after 20 years of perseverance you got to love it... and the early backseat memories.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
