Continuing to work on the second urn. I glued up the sides and top. I used ½ pieces of the space balls (nice fit!) on the sides which worked to center the board for the top.
I added finish to the lip before glueup as once it is glued up, that will be hard to fully access. Also cut and added the splines yesterday. Used the trick of taping around to cover the cuts (thanks Splintergroup). The center spline was through the portion of the wall that is thinner and did just come through to the inside - not really an issue for this project. Trimmed the splines this morning and next need to get to some serious sanding.
I am hoping to create the base (that will be screwed into the bottom after the plastic container with cremains is in place) from the same walnut board used for the top and sides. I had resawn a larger section, so did a glueup to get the width I need.
Worried that this is too thin – not by much though. I am considering adding some maple to increase the thickness. This will play off the maple cross (to be placed on the top) and the splines. Laid some boards to see what it might look like with different options:
Walnut only (using the resawn board – not sure I have enough to make a double layer with walnut)
Walnut plus a thin piece of maple
Walnut with a similar thickness of maple (this feels too heavy on the maple)
Very rough way to try to visualize this before diving in to resaw some maple (I’ll have to see what I actually have).
Interested to hear what others think. I'll continue to contemplate while I get to sanding.
Just thinking - I had shifted the bottom spline location down a bit to ensure it fell on my "thicker" section, and thought with a solid walnut base (my original plan), that would be fine. Now, thinking if adding maple to the base will highlight that more than I would like. I guess I could reverse and put maple on the bottom as an option to consider🤔
I believe I use this site incorrectly. Usually I just poke around here and there. Consequently I feel I miss quite a bit, if it's not on my normal path when here. More recently I look at the list of things next to the little bell thingie where it announces PM's and such. It seemingly also has "current" stuff. DOH!!!!!!! Anyhow this is how I found your post Barb.
Anyhow all that explanation to say, beautiful box Barb. Love the grains, and the build looks great. It is one where I wouldn't mind spending my days, after my days have run out. Plus your skills have gotten so very good, you always spent time on attention to detail, but your work is lapping all of your personality traits at this point.
