Flip Flop Slippers with Button Strap and Heel Bows

This was a custom order for my mom who couldn’t decide between the vintage look rose buttons and silky ribbon bows. She though she wanted them together but I suggested the button on the strap and the bows in the back. I think they turned out nice.

I used size 9 bronze flip flops from Old Navy for the bottoms. I cut away the flip flop straps and continue with the pattern by Make and Do Crew referenced below. I trace a perimeter around the top of the sole about 1/4" in from the edge to make sure all the holes are even from the edge. Then using a ruler I measure out the hole locations about 1/4"-3/8" apart. I poke just into the soles with a sharp pencil to mark the spots. (Count the number of holes and try to make that same amount for both soles).

After the holes are marked, I go back with a 1.75mm hook and poke the holes all the way through from the top of the sole and out the side about half way or lower. You want to make sure you don’t angle too much or you will increase your risk of ripping out the hole on your first round of crochet.

I use a 2.75mm hook for the first row of crochet and then a 4.0mm for the rest.

Instead of crocheting extra rows back and forth to create the heel height, I just changed to hdc in the heel area for rows 7-9 and end after row 9. I start and end the hdc stitches approximately 3.5" from back of shoe.

I staggered the hdc stitches each round so the the first and last hdc fall one short of the previous row (2 less hdc per row) helping to ease the transition from sc to hdc so that all the hdc are on top of each other.

I only crocheted 3 rows of the top section and added the strap with a button.
