I am contemplating a project that may require some significant carving to hollow the interior and exterior of a curved shape. Of course I could do it by hand with large gouges but this could take a while so I am looking for something a little faster. One option of course is to use an angle grinder with one or more of the various disk and burrs available for shaping wood but I am wondering if a power chisel might be handy for this job. I see that Proxxon and Ryobi have small power chisels designed for small relief carving but I am thinking of something like the
Arbortech Power Chisel.Anyone have any experience with that or know of another brand? Arbortech is the only one that seems to come in searches but perhaps I need another term other than "power carving" or "power chisel" for my search. Power carving mostly finds rotary carving in the results. I have seen others in Youtube videos but have never been able to see a brand on them.
Note that I am trying to figure out a way to do this with my CNC but so far I have not been successful with creating tool paths that will work correctly. The best I may be able to do is create a rough shape for the boards I intend to glue up to reduce the amount of hollowing required but I could probably do that simply at the bandsaw. At this point, I am probably going to be using SYP but if I can find suitable spruce (not common down here), that would be my first choice for this project.
