Appreciate the lessons, and I do understand. That is as close as the tool rest can get to the spindle, given it's just a diy wood solution from the previous owner I've yet to replace, because frankly it doesn't get used much (if anyone has an original Goodell/Companion lathe tool rest and banjo they want to part with, though, I'm all ears). 

Same problem with hand position, because of the 3/4" block on the front of the tool rest, acting as the post, it's hard to get the hand any closer without grabbing it from the top side, which I don't like. 

First time he's done the actual turning himself, so in time we'll get on the real lathe if he's still interested. For now it's just for fun. I'll also be kind and swap the oak out for something more low speed turning friendly lol
