Table leaf hardware

Morning all. It’s been a while scene I’ve been here, but I’m hoping some one may give me a hand.
Re-guarding table leaf locks. I know it’s standard practice to put the leaf locks inboard of the skirt, out of sight as it were. Is it a bad / stupid idea to put them on the other side of the skirt? I don’t think they would be all that exposed. I have 3” from the table edge to the skirt. I see Rockler has locks 2 1/4 wide x 2 9/16.
