Nice looking bowl Jim. The curved inward lip is a good idea, I'm pretty sure it'll prove to be useful for a lot of things like nuts, M & M or other small candies, etc.
This looks like red oak to me, I'm working with this right now on a small table. Because of the large amount of deep open grain I was wondering about chip out. But, it looks like you had no problem in that area. 👍
