Thank you all for the nice comments. I don't even remember where that log came from. I know I cut it up when I was cutting all the maple logs for the toys for the zoo a few weeks back. I have 3 more halves laying in the barn if anyone wants them!!
Hi Tom. This wood cut a lot different than red oak- no chip out- and easy cutting. It has some sap wood in it because to remove it all, the bowl would be a lot smaller in diameter and I like a lot of popcorn in one sitting !!
Hi Papadave, I was not real happy with this new gloss lacquer I coated it with. It seems that the particles are not as fine as they used to be. I sprayed and wet sanded it about 5 times. Once I tried to buff it and it melted the lacquer so I had to put it back on the lathe with a special piece to fit in one of the rings on the bottom so I could power sand it with a jam chuck between centers on the lathe.
