Hi George. I think you are right on the hole size. I went with 1 1/4" and it seems to get sparrows in all the other houses. But, I was working on the other side of the yard and I heard this pecking and when I moved a bird flew away from the farthest West house. So I moved  over up against the oak tree nearest the barn and stood still.  The bird came back and pecked a little bit at the hole and then went inside. It was a red headed woodpecker. That peckerwood opened the hole to about 1 1/2".

Hi PapaDave, I have made some birdhouses with the back that comes off but this one is much simpler  .One screw to flip up the top! I grew up with the KISS principle.
