I appreciate the comments, guys.

One thing I do that seems to reduce the burns on my drum sander is to run the pieces through at an angle.

Steve - yeah, I do that too, but for the long slats and only 10" wide drum, the movement across the drum is kind of slow.

As for the name, maybe something like vertical supports, leg supports, or, for something shorter, struts?

Ron - any one of the suggested names beats "slats".
