You should go for it mike, I knew nothing of how to play when I started. I play a little now when I can get my left hand to work that is. After the first couple I took lessons then the repairs forced me to really learn to play so when people were asking questions, set up etc, I would know what they were talking about. You can get kits now for the DIY that takes a lot of the guesswork out, cheap too. For under $150 you can build a playing quality kit. http://www.diyguitars.com.au
