Hi John, tapering was a suggestion from Oldtool ( Tom) and it made it easier because I don't have to be so accurate with the width of the mating dove tail . I  use longer pieces than the diameter of the finished box. I rout them till they slide on  the mating piece where they lock tight and then I lay out the center and cut the round shape. I glue on  a tenon  (spigot) on both halves and  turn it  round and finish the pockets. With a straight dovetail I have to be much more accurate for the fit so it does not get sloppy. target !! It does not take much to miss the target!!
