Pistachio Tapered Dovetailed Lidded Keepsake Boxes

I came back from the sawmill with 2 more slabs of pistachio and the ends were cracked but I did not want to throw them away so I decided to make a couple more boxes for the park craft sale in March. I started by filling them with black epoxy, then I cut the rectangular pieces at 3 degrees on the table saw and then cut the dovetails in on the router table. After the dovetails were fitted, I laid out the center and glued on a a spigot on the top and bottom and turned them round and sanded and finished the sides on the lathe with EEE and Shellawax. Then the inside  pocket was turned on the bottom and the inside was finished the same way. I turned a mortise on the inside of the tops to hold them from the inside to turn off the top spigots and finish the tops. The bottom spigots were turned off using  jam chucks.

One finished at  4" x 1 1/4" and the other is 5" x 1" high. They each of 2  rare earth magnets for a positive closure.

All the surfaces were finished using EEE and Shellawax

Very nice indeed Jim! Beautiful wood and work!
Nice! Is pistachio a hard or soft wood?  Looks really pretty

Beautiful boxes Jim! Most people don't realize how much goes into making things.
fantastic jim, those should sell easy.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Nice ones, Jim! I need to get some flat work finished up, then more progress on a chair before I get to play with things like that at the lathe. Who knew retirement would be so dang busy?

May you have the day you deserve!

Awesome!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thank you all for the nice comments.
Hi Barbara. Pistachio is  a hard wood of middle of the road harness of 1930....compared to red oak at 1290. Cherry at 950 and Mesquite at 2345. I use a lot of mesquite out here in the desert!!

Hi Steve, I try to explain the process for making the stuff I sell at shows and it helps sales!

Very beautiful keepsake boxes. The sliding lid should make this a novelty and you may even get requests for more. Nice work.
Thanks, Tom that tapered dovetail on  the lid was your idea and very good one. It allows the box top to fit real tight when turning the outside!!!

Real beauties Jim!
They remind me of the "compacts" women sometimes carry in their bags, small mirror embedded in the lid.

You could turn this design into any number of cases for "stuff". I see an application for paste wax storage 🤠
SAAAAweet. Beutiful grain [you drug out of that wood, the hard way]
Thanks Bruce and Kelly!!!!!!!!!

Those are beautiful.  Clever design too.
Thanks, Swirt. Actually it is not my design. I met a guy at a craft show who said he saw them in Germany and asked if I could make 2 for his daughters. I made them with a straight dovetail and no magnets. The tapered design is easier to make and the magnets are a real selling point for a "lock" on the lid!!! I sold one at the show!

Very cool design Jim.  I like using the magnets to lock it closed rather than adding another taper to the dovetails.  I'll have to file this one away for inspiration!
Those are really nice Jim, but why is it easier to make a tapered dovetail? It seems to me it would be harder, but I don't know the procedure.

Thanks Ken and John!!
Hi John, tapering was a suggestion from Oldtool ( Tom) and it made it easier because I don't have to be so accurate with the width of the mating dove tail . I  use longer pieces than the diameter of the finished box. I rout them till they slide on  the mating piece where they lock tight and then I lay out the center and cut the round shape. I glue on  a tenon  (spigot) on both halves and  turn it  round and finish the pockets. With a straight dovetail I have to be much more accurate for the fit so it does not get sloppy. target !! It does not take much to miss the target!!
