Oldtool - Yes door dings have been on my mind for some time🙂. I have several thoughts. The first ones are defensive:
- Only go to parking lots in off hours. For Home Depot-type stores that'll be early weekdays
- Park far away. A friend has a stunning 70s Camaro. When he parks far away he comes back and there's a bunch of cars parked next to him? (Sound familiar Splint?) Luckily they are almost always car guys and present low risk
- Take another car. At first this was just an art project with not much thought about protecting it. I'm pretty sure at this point I'm not leaving it at a trailhead for a day hike
- Take a car cover. If we spend the night somewhere this might be an option.
If this is not enough then we move to repairs.
- The ash trim is sealed in epoxy and will have an automotive clear coat on it. Cut away the damage, patch, reseal and recoat
- Damage to the fiberglass cherry is similar. Sand down the damage, patch, add fiberglass, sand seal and recoat.
- If I'm in a collision and the panel is destroyed. I'll have to start over - if possible. Otherwise it will be fun while it lasted.
