Good points George.
I use my drum for really everything versus dragging out the planer (unless there are a lot of bf. to run).
For anything generally under 30", a 36 grit belt and a sled with shims will make any rough cut bowed and twisted stock flat and ready for finer grits. The slow motion compared to a planer is also a plus if not in a rush.
The drum sanders are really over-priced though for how they are built. The FlatMaster style seems to have captured the functionality for smalls work with a reasonable price. Of course a power feed would be great, but then you'd have a drum sander.
