Gotta love those clutch chucks! Knots? feh! The real issue is hidden nails.....
I use my vixey bits that go through knots like butter and as for nails, I have one of these industrial toe nail clippers,

hole hawgs were notorious for throwing guys off ladders....
At least I wont fall far... at my age I stick to one rung ladders... and only 150mm separation.
If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
