Hi Nathan, I use lacquer most of the time but I tried this combination that I use on pens. I sand to 400, then coat with shellac and sand to 3500 and then use EEE and Shellawax for a finish.
I'm not sure how it holds up to moisture, but with any wood ring, if you use it in water, it will get dull over time and can be recoated. I usually recoat with lacquer then.
