Three Rings

I had an order for a size 15  ring with blue Azurite inlay so I turned 3 of them- a 15, a 15 1/2 and a 16.......just in case it needed to be a little bigger.
The base ring is mesquite turned across the grain. I had 4 others turned with the grain and they all broke on the expanding mandrel.
The are finished with shellac and then EEE and Shellawax

Damn JJ, on first glance that leading picture would have sent Sheriff John on LJ gasping for air and reaching for his hatchet.
I was even concerned for here... however seeing the base of that second appendage, I realised you were fingering me.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Lovely rings, inlay and .mesquite go well together.

Very pretty.  Have you used shellac on rings before?  Just wandering how it holds up to moisture from the skin, etc..

Thank you all for the nice comments.
Hi Nathan, I use lacquer most of the time but I tried this combination that I use on pens. I sand  to 400, then coat with shellac and sand to 3500 and then use EEE and Shellawax for a finish.
I'm not sure how it holds up to moisture, but with any wood ring, if you use it in water, it will get dull over time and can be recoated. I usually recoat with lacquer then.

They came out beautiful Jim. I can’t imagine how you turned them. Great job. I have to look up what blue Azurite is.

Jim those are a piece of art truly...if any one has ever tried to make a ring, it is not the easiest thing ever...but I have to ask one thing that stands out...size 16????  Is that for big foot?  LOL

Mike

Sauron.  It is the one that rules them all.

Thanks Petey.
Hi James, Azurite is  mineral/stone that is found in Arizona. I have found it on trips to the mountains and desert. It seems always to be found with turquoise in the same rock. I used to pulverize and and put in for inlay material, but for this kind of work I need the real fine powdered Azurite and I can buy all kind of inlay powders from Natural Expressions (480-390-4436) in Gilbert, Az. They do ship, too.  Fred Thiele is a great guy and is reasonable on his prices. He has rocks from all over the world and they cut them and grind them right out back of the office. This blue inlay has very small pieces of turquoise in it....can't really totally separate it.    If you cal Fred, tell him I sent you !  Cheers, Jim
