This is a simple jig and setup I used to put grooved tread patterns on the tyres. Works very well on a drill press.
As can be seen the jig consists of a slot cut out of a piece of timber to allow a snug fit so the tyre can't wobble. The tyre is mounted on an axle so it can be turned. I used a 1.5mm milling bit set to cut a 1mm deep tread. The two way adjustable vice is wound into the cutter slowly while holding the tyre with your fingers until the milling bit gets to the top centre of the tyre looking from side on. From there the tyre can be rotated slowly until the grove is complete then repeat for the next groove.
