Sphere Factor Vintage Retrofit Puzzle

Hi Guys,

I love boxes, especially vintage ones like this metal embossed tin box.  What I typically like about these kinds of boxes is that they have a wood lining which makes it great for gluing in other mischievous little parts.  I see these cool boxes in the shops and enjoy visioning how some interesting ones are worthy of retrofitting into puzzle boxes and maybe breathe new life into them.

This puzzle was lost at sea over 10 years ago and I figure its safe to talk about it now, haha.

There is a steel marble that rolls around inside and it can be difficult to get it to stay on the upper level where the lid release is found.  The weight of the steel ball is what unlocks the lid is fangled just right, miss it and the steel ball roll can roll right down a hole back to the bottom.  This mechanism was the most challenging part to create.

Since the top layer lid was permanently glued down I didn't get too fussy on the wood used within when it was never going to be seen.

There is two little secret spaces accessible when the lid has been opened.

I added some steel springs on the underside of some holes in an attempt to keep the ball from being able to just return back up the same hole, there had to be a special route that also required the box to sometimes be upright, and sometimes upside down, oh so tricky.

Making a puzzle box from scratch can be much easier because you can have the bottom assembled after everything inside has proven to works, however, these vintage retrofit designs can be quite the challenge.  Once the lid is closed the first time and it locks, you have no idea if it will work as intended, or if I will even get it back open again, haha!  Luckily, in this case It all worked great, so long as I followed the route precisely!

That is a cool box, the puzzle boxes are neat. Well Done.

Main Street to the Mountains

Very cool! Lost at sea? Like someone got frustrated and deep-sixed it?

Very cool!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Haha, thanks guys!  I only ever lost one package in shipping, good odds I reckon.
