Back in 2008, I was building this CD Rack for a coworker for what seems like forever.
This is my own design and is built without formal plans.
It's solid black cherry and uses stopped dadoes for the shelves and stub
mortise and tenons for the backs. The shelves are tilted back at 5 degrees and
the backs are ripped with a 5 degree bevel so they're parallel to the back of the sides.
It's finished with numerous coats of freshly made dewaxed shellac, several coats of BLO and
two topcoats of Original Waterlox.
This project was one of those `What the heck' projects-I've made several various flavors
of this design yet I kept having little problems that I had to go back and tweak.
Guess I've been making too many pens and not doing enough flat work lately.
Today, I finished rubbing out the last topcoat and finally got a product I'm pleased with.
The shelves are about 30" wide and the unit is about 45" tall and 6" deep.
The rack holds roughly 70 per shelf-490 CDs.
The actual amount held will depend on how much space is taken up by box sets
and old-style double cases as well as how many are burned from downloads and
stored in thin jewel cases.
With a lot of thin cases, it's possible he could get 100 CDs per shelf or more on it.
No matter how many cases he stores on each shelf, there isn't nearly enough weight
to cause any sag-that's for sure.
This is modeled after one of my favorite personal projects—a smaller CD rack using all sliding dovetails.
