Angled carving rest

Sort of a micro-project, but it will enable a lot of other things.

I had a couple triangular braces I’ll be putting on the insides of the legs of a bench I’m working on, and I plan to do a bit of carving on the bench itself and on the legs, but I haven’t done any serious carving for a while, so I thought I should warm up by carving the braces. Plus, they’ll make a neat surprise for anyone who looks underneath the bench.

So I cut some 45°︎ angles in some pine and glued and screwed it together to hold the angled pieces with their faces level. And it works pretty well. I clamp the “hook” at the front end in my face vise, and rest the piece in the trough, and I can carve away without have to worry much about workholding.

Also unpacked a box that had my texturing tools in it yesterday, so now I’ve got those to play with. The bench these braces will go onto will be going to a couple who were in their 50s and 60s when they found each other and got married, so I figured adding paired hearts would be a nice touch.

The wood I’m carving is some “cherry” that came from India in a crate holding a slab of stone. Not sure what it really is, but it’s pretty enough that I feel a little bad using it for mere braces, but there you have it.

May you have the day you deserve!

good idea dave, the right jig can sure make things a lot easier.

Such interesting color to that wood!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thanks, Pottz. For hand-tool woodworking, workholding is something like 90% of the battle.

Right, Ryan? And it’s free. They burn most of it. Only problem is that it’s fumigated with methyl bromide before leaving India, and that’s kinda poisonous.

oh so a good respirator is a definite if using power tools that create dust !

Nice idea for holding Dave!
I'd probably just squeeze it in the vice, destroy the corners, then ponder what to do.

You are a visionary!

Love it how you are still unpacking 😀
Smart! Nice jig, Dave:) Looking forward to seeing the bench, too.

No name noobie here

Thinking outside the box on that. As you said, holding the piece is most of the battle.

Yeah, Pottz. I use N95 masks and run filters and ventilation in the shop when cutting or planing it.

Thanks, Tony.

Yeah, I thought pretty hard about that approach too, Splint. I think I just have one more box that has woodworking tools in it yet that I haven’t unpacked, but my bench top is full of stuff that needs new homes now, so there’s probably another organizer next in the queue.

Thanks, YRTi, so am I! ;-)

Thanks, Tim!

Thanks, Eric. Right! I’ve got a similar thing that’s 3’ long that I use for octagonalizing sticks for chair or stool legs. This one will hold wider, shorter pieces.

Nice Dave

Looks nicer than mine, which are just a couple of mini rests and a planing stop.
The bench hook is a good idea to stop any lateral movement.

Yeah, Mike. I don’t actually have holes in the top of the bench I primarily work at. The face vise and planing stop do most of my workholding there. One of these days I’ll replace the top with something thick enough to drill holes in.

Nice looking hand tool jig, fulfills it's intended purpose quite well.
Thanks, Tom!
