A small Japanese chest - Kodansu

For those of you who have followed some of my past projects you will be aware that I’m in my Japanese period……… This piece was one of the last items for Kodo - the Japanese incense ceremony.   Its a small small chest or Kodansu

It is used to hold the origami packets of incense made up for a range of different incense comparing games – Kumiko.

As with all the other pieces in the suite, this small chest, 200 x 200 x 150 or 8” x 6” is covered with a Teak diamond parquetry pattern enhanced with Mother of Pearl stringing and gold MOP dots. The edgings and base are walnut. The chest is veneered marine ply.

The drawers are from lime/bass wood, with walnut veneered ply bottoms, and the same Teak diamond parquetry and MOP shell dots on their fronts.

The MOP string is cut from laminated sheets that I get from ‘Australian MOP’. They also sell a vast range of dots from different shells, as well as from reconstituted stone. The hardware is from the ‘cheap as chips’, AliExpress.

I made the origami packets after researching them on the internet – a fascinating subject in its own right!!

I’m thinking this completes the set …. or until I discover another item to include.

As ever thankyou for looking. Please ask if you hjave any questions.

Another wonderful project. Beautiful! Thanks for the write up as well!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

The fun part of a box is discovering what is inside. Yours never disappoint! Another beautiful piece.
Gorgeous work, as always.
