I enjoy making unique frames. My son got this print as a gift and really enjoys it. I offered to make a frame for it. In 2021 I finished it.
I spent some time on the design. I wanted a frame that gave a feeling of bulk without being too big. To accomplish this I focused on the joinery.
I ended up with a modified cross lap joint.
To get the feeling of bulk I added material to the top part of the joint. The intent is to give the impression that the top layer is wrapping itself around the lower one.
To soften the edges I put a bevel on all of them.
To add a little character I put two square pegs made from padauk in each joint. The pegs have a beveled top.
To make things interesting I varied how the joints overlap. The sides cover the top rail while the bottom covers the sides. As a final detail, I varied the width of the frame pieces. The top is the narrowest; the bottom is the widest with sides in between.
I’m adding drawings for each of the pieces for anyone who is interested. For anyone interested in the print I see the artist’s name is Buckett.
Here is the bottom piece. The top view is of the back side.
To add a little clarity here is another view.
Here is a drawing of the left side. The right side is mirrored.
The bottom joint for the side piece is shown here.
And the top joint view is here.
And finally, here is the drawing for the top piece.
It looks really good, it would make a great design for any pre assembled picture frame requirements. I see a brief mention of a table saw, but nothing else , ... for instance a HCM and the likes. I would be curious as to the construction method you used to go about making it Oh BTW it must have been a big splash as I see the bowl is fractured!
I think you have inspired me enough to do a replication ! ...standby!
Thanks for the comments! Rob - most of the work was done with the table saw. The was some use of a mortising machine, router, and disc sander. I set the thickness of the pieces and then added blocks for the parts that wrap over the joints.
Thanks for the comments! I'm going to have to update my description. My idea was to create a frame that gave the impression of a cage to hold the Hulk - not that there is a cage that can actually hold him!
