My brother-in-law is a serious pistol shooter and wanted to build a range box similar to those other shooters have. The typical box holds a couple of target pistols, magazines, targets, and ammo. it has a side that folds up and locks and supports a spotting scope. Naturally, his had to be nicer than anything on the range.
I had picked up some walnut from a new shipment and a couple of pieces had beautiful figure. Planed them down to 1/2" to reduce the weight and used box joints rather than dovetails as the sides were too wide for the dovetail apparatus and there was no time to do them by hand.
The knobs go up through the case into brass threaded inserts in the folding side to lock it in place to prevent wind from blowing it closed - with the spotting scope! He added a leather carrying handle later.
The finish was a coat of 1 pound cut shellac, followed by a couple of coats of lacquer (my usual blend of 1/2 SG and 1/2 satin).
The result was really nice and got him a lot attention on the range. My only regret is that I wish I had save the walnut for something a bit more elegant than a range box !
