I liked the first tankard I built so I made another one a little smaller that I could actually use. After building the re-purposed baby bed I had a bunch of small pieces of hard maple left over. What to do? I didn't want to put them into the burn pile so...I cut them into pieces for a beer mug / tankard. I got a wild hair and decided it was too plain so how about a carving to make it a little less like a baby bed mug. I found this Celtic Dragon online and a little Dremel and carving knife work and there it is.
The handle is walnut mounted with Titebond 3 and two dowels. the cup side holes do not penetrate the cup. Rounding was done on a belt & disc sander. I don't have a lathe so the inside is not fully round. Inside smoothing was done wit a flap sander on my drill press at 3500 rpm. I couldn't get to the bottom so the rest is not rounded. Finish is Tung Oil with the inside having a cutting board conditioner of mineral oil and beeswax.
