Tankard

I built this tankard as a gift for my Son's wedding. My first attempt at a mug. This one is pretty big. I calculated the volume and it will hold about 4 1/2 12 oz beers. That should make for a real party. I think I will try to make a smaller one next.
The mug is black walnut with an exterior finish of Formby's Tung Oil, which is food safe. The interior will be cutting board mineral oil & bee's wax. I don't really expect it to be used for drinking but it could be I guess.

It looks really good.   Banding and handle compliment the mug.

I like the lines and styling of that, looks excellent!
Capacity is certainly proper for a kegger party!
That looks really good! I've got a couple questions:
Were the staves tapered?
Did you do the final shaping on a lathe?
excellent !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

The staves are tapered on both sides. 12 staves @ 15 degrees on each side (360/12 = 30 degrees, 30/2=15 degrees), 1 1/4" wide.
I do not have a lathe so final shaping was simply on a sander. The inside was a flap sander. Not as smooth as the outside but effective.
Nicely done. How did you attach the handle?

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Real nice tankard for making without a lathe!!!

The handle has two 1/4" dowels. The dowel in the tankard side is only drilled partway. I did not want it to penetrate the cup. It is glued from there using Titebond 3.
