Ash cane

I blogged the progress of building this cane as I was recovering from back surgery, and now it’s finished. Ash, a narrow strip of granadillo, white grain filler on the handle, and 7 coats of Tru-Oil to finish it. The diameter of the shaft is close to 1¼ inches (31mm). Giving it to an acquaintance from the local farmers market this afternoon, who saw me with my cane on August 29, and said that he’d like one like it, so I made two. The other is still unfinished, but I’ll wrap it up over the next week or so.

May you have the day you deserve!

Nice Dave, I'm sure this will be appreciated by the new owner.
Thanks, folks! Kinda choked him up a little when I told him it was free, but he volunteers there a few hours every week, so it’s nice to help him out.

Nicely done! And a good blog too!

What a special gift! And so rewarding to have someone really appreciate it. Nicely done!
Great gift, Dave! The details are nice, too. I was interested in the finish but they don't ship it to California...

Thanks, folks!

Tru-Oil is similar to, but quicker curing than Tried and True Varnish Oil, YRTi. I should maybe have done a first coat of linseed oil or tung oil mixed with orange oil for better penetration, but I wanted to try Tru-Oil on raw wood this time. It’s a pretty decent quick finish, similar to a wipe-on-poly.

Cane is good looking and should be functionable!

Nice cane Dave.  Ash is a great wood choice.

Thanks, Dave. That's what I thought. I actually use Tried and True Varnish Oil and I like the durable finish but it takes a long time to cure. I read your blog and you said you needed 3-4 more coats on the last post and within 2 days, here you posted the finished product so I thought Tru-oil should be a quick cure finish and I was interested in it:)

Very nice Dave...and a great gesture of giving.
I've used both tru oil and tried and true...like them both. The main difference is the drying time and the tru oil is capable of a higher gloss shine. Both good products
Thanks, folks!

Yeah, YRTi and Tom, dry time is the big reason I gave Tru-Oil a try. Plus, Birchwood-Casey hasn’t made many bad products that I’m aware of. But it’s about a 2 hour dry time, as opposed to T&T, which is overnight.

And yes, I think Tru-Oil is a bit more of a glossy finish, but that might just be because I put on more coats before I got tired of finishing. With Tried&True, I usually run out of patience before I have the finish I really want.

Good looking cane, Dave!!!
