Toolbox Charging Station

Unlike many in my industry I do not like tying up a drawer in my box with charging stations.  Considering how many different chargers a drawer is just not good use of precious drawer space.  The top of my box however, it is fair game.  Developed this to handle all my charging needs plus room to grow as more are needed.  Made from plywood edge banded with pine.  Fo the face I used roofing tin gluing it down with contact cement.  A nice addition to the shop.  Gets cut off by main power switch each night so no batteries charging when I am not there.  Can't forget it, my overhead light is in the mix so I would see the light on before I close up shop each night.

nice setup gunny !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Can never have enough power. A few USB chargers in there also very useful. A power strip big enough to power Clark Griswolds Christmas lights. There's a spot on the back of your box that the legs slide into?
Nice to have all in one place. Like you noted, I don't like to leave chargers on - like the idea of a switch to turn them all off.

I built in a aluminum strip under font that sticks out 1 inch, put a couple screws in it to keep it in place.

Great idea Gunny!

Keeps the fresh batteries in place where you can find the darn things.
I have mine on a timer that runs 1 hour each day. Keeps them topped off and avoids overcharging (hopefully).
I maybe have to swap batteries every few weeks so not the high use like I expect you have.

Same here for the ones at home.  I average 2 batteries a day on headlamps and at least 1 for any one of the 11 cordless tools I use at work.

Smart idea, Gunny. I was always going to set  up a charging station but lack the room. Wall space is at a premium in my shop!! I pull the chargers out as I need them............Cheers, JIm

Yeah I feel ya on the wall space deal.  I have one in home shop, but that is absolute limit for space.

Nice charging station.

Gunnt or Pottz any recommendation for a timer to shut off power to a charger?

I've always kept old/obsolete doodads like timers so I just use an old mechanical style with the "clock" dial. One advantage is if the power blips, the timer is just offset by the outage time and still gives me 1 hour per day.
Many of the fancy digital ones just stay off and blink "12:00" like VCRs.

With Li ion batteries you get the longest lifespan if you only charge to 80% and discharge to no less than 20%
The best chargers will do this for you, but then you probably have to upgrade them to get that feature ($$)
Nice project gunny!

Thanks!!

Very cool Gunny!  I would imagine the area that the chargers would take is very precious in a setting like that...great idea and execution....I also suppose it would be a long drive from Iowa to have YOU work on my vehicles!!!

Mike

I like it!  The paint and the roofing tin make it fit in just right with your box.  I like the inclusion of the USB outlets too.  They're always practical these days.

Yeah heck of a drive!

Very true, half of my smaller test equipment uses USB only.
