UFO Bowl

The shape was not what I planned when I started this one.  It evolved because it was the most I could get from the odd shaped chunk of wood I started with.  Of course I did not think to take a picture before I started.  The chunk was a piece that was hanging from a branch of Bradford pear that had broken off during a storm.  Normally I would have just thrown the small odd shaped piece away but I could see that it had some significant ripple at the surface of the split so it has been sitting around my shop for several years as I tried to imagine what to do with such a small, odd shaped piece.    I probably should have made the bottom the top of the piece to show off the figure better but I like to keep some bark on Bradford pear because of the patterns it creates when you turn it and the way it finishes.   It is about 7 inches across and 3 inches tall.  It is finished with just Ack's sanding paste and wax.

Good looking bowl.    Did you hollow out the piece or turn top and bottom separately then glue together?   Guess is one piece.
Well done

Ron

Nice work, Nathan! A pretty piece of wood and you figured out how to use it well.

May you have the day you deserve!

That’s some great grain!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

So pretty! Nice save of a piece that could have been thrown away.
I like it!  Love BP and that shape is awesome!
Nathan,

 Beautiful grain in that wood.

Nice! I like the figure, too.

Thanks guys.  It was turned from a single piece.  I used a hook carbide tool to hollow out a little beneath the rim.   I didn't get to crazy with the undercut.

I like the shape that you came up with and the way the bark finished.
