Splint, thanks for your guess. The bark doesn't look like our cherry trees, but the color is closer. Also there were some larger diameter pieces (12") and our cherry trees don't usually get very large here.
Jim, thanks for your link, but I have no idea where to even start on that website. It only shows lumber and not the bark. I looked at misc. maple but didn't really see anything all that similar to this sample, but maybe that's just because this grain is so tight.
