Personally for your case I'd have the spear gun as a blog series. Opening "chapter" would be what you are trying to build, maybe show some examples, then create future chapters exploring ideas and techniques for each step as their needs arise.
A final "project" can show your finished work and have a link to the blog series for detailed info.
