I would start by sharpening the iron, testing for your opinion in using it, and if you like you can then make it pretty.
As for me, I would only soak in vinegar to remove rust, then wash with soap & water, and spray with denatured alcohol to dry up any water on it.
Pretty doesn't do any thing for me, I just enjoy using and creating.
