A friend from church gave this to me this morning. From a quick Google it is an edge trimming plane. Pretty rough shape so any suggestions on best ways to clean it up for use are greatly appreciated.

pretty cool.  Check with others. on how to clean up.  You tube has a bunch of videos.

Do you think the CMT blade cleaner would work? I have some of that. Will need to get some Simple Green otherwise.
thats mostly used just to clean and remove pitch and resin build up for saw blades.

Hi Barb,
I would start by sharpening the iron, testing for your opinion in using it, and if you like you can then make it pretty.
As for me, I would only soak in vinegar to remove rust, then wash with soap & water, and spray with denatured alcohol to dry up any water on it.
Pretty doesn't do any thing for me, I just enjoy using and creating.
This is just to be used - not looking to make it pretty, but initial impression is that it's not very usable with all the rust. Will see if I can get it apart first and then try to clean it.
We would all like nice friends like that!

For a user, you just need the inside angle that rides the wood to be smooth and the blade sharp (and square).

The exterior rust is what you would remove to make it "nice" in the hand. OT has the right idea for a quick clean up and return to service.

Definitely a keeper!
The little tight spaces if you have a Dremel and a small wire brush works good to.
I’m with Old Tool.  Some of that rust looks pretty set-in.  I’d soak it in something to neutralize it then just clean it up with some Simple Green (or dish soap) and go to work if you aren’t inclined to make it pretty.
So...after some YouTube time...I saw some use of vinegar (need to look at duration and how to "neutralize"??)..and ran across Metal Rescue (might be easier?) for the rust. Likely some overall cleanup is needed first.
Doesn’t look all that terrible. It’ll clean up ok! Get the iron clean, sharp and square and you should be good!

Both the Vinegar, and the Simple Green as a follow up are both very low on the caustic scale, and neither will do irreparable harm. I find Simple Green is a wonderful cleaner if it isn't just rust, but any good cleaner can do the same, and you probably have something you like, already at home. Personally I start with Vinegar if I want rust to go away, sometimes that gets you to a point you are good to go. Not a "wire" brush, but I start with a nylon one, as stiff as you can find, but know Harbor Freight has a set of different sizes and materials, but you can buy some singles on Amazon. Then a half a ton of elbow grease and it should be purty again. Best of luck. I tried one of them years ago, and for me they were not as effective as other methods. But I suppose they exist because they work well for others, or maybe in situations I was never in?

In Blood and Gore, Patrick is very high on this plane, my time with one was years before I ever saw or met Patrick, and probably due to my poor exposure I have remained without one. That said my overall plane use is way down as I have been corrupted by electron sizzling power tools, laughs an evil sounding laugh, uh, sorry I get that way. :-)

Which reminds me once again, I need to get busy selling off all the many hand tools I never use anymore. Maybe not, but seems to be tons of the stuff, just laying around.
Barb.. the best and most efficient way to remove the rust is to submerse all the pieces into an electrolysis tank. Setting up electrolysis is easy to do. Look into it.
BTW I have an edge plane from Lee Valley that they made after the 95. Love it. I use it all the time.
rick i got a router and bits that will do the same thing in 30 seconds ! just sayin 😂

Yeah Pottz.... but by the time you pull it out and set it up I'll have the job done! 😜 just sayin! Lol
I haven't worked on it at all yet. Pretty sure electrolysis is beyond my skill set. 🤷‍♀️Will see what a brush does for cleanup and go from there.

wanna bet buddy. this is just the compact routers with a different bit in each one. shall i go to the big ones ? 🤣

Barb, you can do it…it’s not hard. Google it.

Barb,

I just picked up one of these at a local antique store. There are 4 variations of this plane in it's life cycle. Mine is the last version. The one you have is the third version.

My first attempt at cleanup would be to try WD40, 0000 steel wool and a bit of elbow grease to see if it cleans up enough to use. If not, I'd move to Evaporust or Metal Rescue to soak it in for a few hours.

I was lucky, the one I bought has no rust. All I need to do is sharpen the blade and see how it works.
