Rockler Lathe Dust Collection system

I’ve had this Dust Right lathe dust collector for a while. It does a good job of picking up dust while sanding, especially for spindle sanding. I’ve got mine attached to a 4” hose via magnetic couplers, so I leave the Dust Right on the lathe full time and just tie in the DC hose when sanding. It’s got several adjustment points and the scoop pivots along the long axis to allow better collection angle. It’s a bit small, but can be moved along the ways without too much trouble if you’re sanding something long. Usually I just put it in the middle and accept some loss on each side.

While the Dust Right does pretty well for sanding, it doesn’t do much of anything while turning. Honestly, it’s kind of in the way sometimes. It’s usually easy enough to pivot it out of the way, but I wish it was just a little bit simpler to take on and off of the lathe. A redesign of the backing bar that holds it securely under the lathe ways would make that easier. I also use a high velocity dust collector (Oneida Supercell) so I get powerful suction that does a great job while sanding, despite the short section of 2” (2.5”?) corrugated black hose native to the Dust Right.

Overall, I think this is a good edition to a lathe. I don’t think you’re ever going to do a great job of collecting chips from turning, but those are easy enough to sweep up, for me anyway. It’s the dust that I want to keep down, and the Dust Right does a pretty good job of that. I’ve not used the Big Gulp style collector, so that might be another option to consider. I think if my lathe was permanently mounted some place, and not on wheels, I’d be more inclined to try a bigger collection ‘mouth’, but for a mobile lathe this works pretty well if you’re honest about its limitations.

Reduced stars for limited capacity and a less-than-super-easy quick mounting system.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

ive got one and i agree with what youve said.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.
