Any Nova Lathe Owners? (DVR 2024, XP, 1624, 1624 II or Saturn specifically)

Does anyone happen to own (or have access to) one of the above lathes?  I'd love to get the measurements for the bolt/pin spacing for the end of the bed that a bed extension can attach to.  Similarilly the space and thickness of the gap for the tail stock to ride in as well.  I've sent a message to Nova support, but figured I'd try here in the mean time as well.

I've got a Nova 3000 lathe, which has long since been out of production along with their bed extensions.  The design of the Nova 3000 is so similar to the 1624 that I was curious if a bed extension from one of the above listed machines would work (understanding it does not match aesthetically).  Even if the height was different and I had to modify/custom make my stand to accommodate I'd be happy.  It's essentially the only thing preventing me from selling my smaller Jet 1221VS and going down to 1 lathe (or 3 if you count the treadle lathe and the cobbled together old ... whatever it was lol)

For anyone who comes across this, I heard back. As long as it's got this bed, the new extensions will work with it.  I guess the earlier version of the Nova 3000 had a tube style bed that wouldn't work.

Mossie, I have a DVR XP (and accessories circa 2011).  I may have the machinery but not the associated jargon.

If this is of any benefit,
please point to the measurements you need... It is a metric shop so you might need to reach for an abacus to do some conversion.

Hmmm, time for a touch of WD40/Silver-Glide.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Thanks Duck! It's a 4 bolts spacing I was after, the rectangle measurements for those. Sounds like it should match though, and I already ordered one so we'll find out soon enough 😂
Also the fold away hinge option is awesome

If you've already ordered it, I wont measure and comment... that'd be a tad better than know it's wrong and wait for a dodgy product.

Yeah, that swing away is great...  I can swing it away onto the original deck and if i need the extension, it's solid enough to stand parallel without support.

Notice you've got the outrigger... I bought it before I woke up and realised I'm never gonna turn a bowl, however, It's been great when I had to fiddle with oversized discs.

Yeah, unfortunately the hinge was discontinued long ago as well, and I'm guessing finding a new one will be about as common as finding an extension on the used market lol  I'd assume I'd find a whole lathe like yours with both before I'd find just the hinge and/or extension.  Wouldn't complain if I did, though 😆

Mine came with the outboard tool post, and I've not used it yet, but I do like to turn bowls (that's probably 90% of what I turn on the lathe anymore), so I'm hoping to use it more.  I've got a Jet 1221vs lathe as well which has an extension on it.  My plan is that if this new extension does indeed work with my Nova like the support person said it would, then I'll be selling off the Jet and going down to the one lathe instead of having two.  Trying to minimize the duplicates to gain a little more space (looking at you island of 4 table saws)

Can't comment on your desire for more space... the 2nd wish list item behind more clamps.

I've kept my Jet for buffing.  Being vs, it's great to reduce the speed of the 203.2mm buffers and the knock out of hand events.

Yeah, my Nova 3000 has a 3 phase motor with a VFD so I can dial down the RPMs as well. I've thought about keeping the Jet for buffing or small stuff, but ... with the extension on it, it feels like too much to keep around just for that.  Hmm... maybe I should see about just selling the extension for my Jet though... crap lol

It would be awesome to have a ‘spare’ lathe just left set up for buffing! Not that I have the room for it, but that would be cool! Plus, you’d have it for other stuff like segmented bowl assembly, etc. without tying up the primary lathe. Sigh…if I just had the room!!!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

I have the room, I just have too many other things in said room 🤣

Turns out the support guy was wrong, it does not in fact fit. Bolt holes are 3/4" too wide, and different configuration of threaded and through. Damn it

Bummer!

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed, I was getting excited for it.

At least woodcraft support is great, and I they actually ship it from their warehouse and not direct ship from Nova like Rockler. That means there's no restocking fee, though she was going to double check that for me when she sends the return label on Monday.

Now I want a new lathe, but they're too dang expensive since these bigger machines don't show up on the used market around me very often 🫤

I feel that one has to be lucky to find a good second hand machine (any)... after all why would someone want to sell a good machine... unless she's a widow or a disgruntled ex.

that's basically what I told my wife too.  The problem with trying to find a good larger lathe on the used market is that by the time someone buys a nice larger lathe they're already pretty committed to turning so it's either typically an estate or family members selling it.  Unlike entry level lathes which seem to be fun for a few months and then get sold a couple years later...

I felt lucky to find my Nova 3000 for $300 and it was about 4 blocks away from me, no less.  Guy got it form his dad, used it a few times and the original VFD blew up on it.  He bought a new one , wired it up and blew that one up.  So listed it for about what he paid for the VFD he blew up lol  Thankfully I got it right my first try 🤣
