Nice fix.
Cracking is all too frequently a problem when you work in the center end grain of the branch or log. I usually try to avoid that. Of course if the branch is not big enough to work without including the center what can you do? When I have worked that way I sometimes can stop the crack if I catch it early and fill it with medium CA glue, but it may just put the stress somewhere else and crack anyway.
