Bottle Vase

I was given this cobalt blue glass bottle and it was not the kind I use in the bottle flowers so I decided to use it in a vase- so someone could put flowers and water in a wood vase. I used a blank that had been laying around in the barn for years. It had some cracks in it and I filled them before finishing it. Then, when I took it off the lathe, it cracked further. So I filled the new cracks with turquoise and it looks like it is happy now.
I'm not sure about the type of wood. It looks like red oak but I don't usually turn any oak. It is finished with Danish oil and buffed and waxed.

Cheers, Jim

I’m about to give up on my Russian olive because even after it’s done cracking before I turn it, it will crack more after I turn it. Such a pain in the rear. Nice result!

May you have the day you deserve!

Nice fix.

Cracking is all too frequently a problem when you work in the center end grain of the branch or log.  I usually try to avoid that.  Of course if the branch is not big enough to work without including the center what can you do?  When I have worked that way I sometimes can stop the crack if I catch it early and fill it with medium CA glue, but it may just put the stress somewhere else and crack anyway.

Looks nice! Cracks are cracks, unfortunately, but you fill them nicely.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

That is a really great idea, the bottle for the water, inside a turning. I've not seen that before and I think I'll give it a try sometime. Nice work.
Thank you all for the nice comments. I'm finally getting some of the projects finished that I started last year.
I had the vase bored to fit the bottle last November but it was way to small to go in there when we got back from Arizona!

I like it. That blue is special, and would play off of any wood color, or grain pattern. Cracks, ehhh, FWIW the fills look pretty cool too. :-)
Thanks, George!!
