crowie ..... I wish I had your patience and computer knowledge to do something similar
As we get older we all become a patient with more regular doctor's visits.... as for computers, I'm no engineer or mathematician... I'm a plagiarist. All my puzzle ideas have been taken from the internet and all I've done is document the solution and tabulate measurements for the build process that anyone can do/follow. I've been trending away from laser cut for those with just "normal" tools. A few I had to solve myself, however, there are many that never made it to "print" as I failed to solve it. It's hard to make up the parts/sizes without a formal solution.
Steve Rasmussen That's another cool puzzle! I think the grandkids need to get a bit older before I spring this one on them.
The demand for the "packing puzzles" are from adults... not everyone's cuppaT, but those that like them go overboard... I taxes/inflation keeps at the current rate, I could eke out some sort of existence from selling them.
SplinterGroup Another great writeup, good details! Love the boomby wood, spalted is coolio. The tabbed construction is nice, easy assembly. I know you like the dowel approach when you use layers but this works!
That spalted looked great, but far too fragile to subject it to machinery abuse.... the laser is gentle and after glueup, it has enough structure to withstand sanding. I am trying to incorpurate minimal (to none) laser use to create greater diversity.
Kel Snake Hey now, gotta like a bin full of cubes! There was a period where I enjoyed making as many different kinds of puzzles I could with them, still do once in awhile.
Unfortunately, I'm not clever enough to make my own puzzles mathematically which a lot of these packing puzzles depend on... my only design was this maze puzzle, though it was inspired by a comment posted in the 3D Printing forum, which had nothing to do with workshops. The other design I "created" was another maze box puzzle, though it was based on those Japanese puzzle boxes using sliding two separate bits through a hidden maze... though I thought its hero aspect was the laser engraved design on the outside of the box.
If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
